Parkland Metal students reuse old desks and enjoy the rewards
by Spencer Gray - Friday, 4 June 2010, 12:41 PM

Parkland Secondary Metal students are taking old desks and turning them into grills. Reusing items that were set to head to the landfill, their ingenuity and creativity are rewarded with great food and conversation . Another great idea by our youth!

From Mrs. McRae's Gr. 5 class

Grade5's in my class have completed a critical thinking unit on 'The Lorax' by Dr. Seuss. They have completed activities related to wants/needs, the ways they are Once-lers and how they can take up the challenge of the Lorax. They will be writing a letter to Mother Earth to tell what they 'stand up for'.

We are also participating in the climate change workshop and have made huge 'brainstorm' lists about ways we can make a difference. We have talked about the 'Power of One' and that change begins with me. If you are interested in this free workshop, contact:

As well, Mrs. McRae's class is also doing a small unit of the trophy hunting of grizzly bears and have a speaker from the wild life conservatory coming in once they have completed the background information.

On May 1st 2010, Claremont Secondary School will be hosting a community climate change event. In teams of 5, students and community members are invited to ride laps around the Claremont track (1 rider per team at a time) for a total of 350 laps per team (350 being the recommended parts-per-million of CO2 in the atmosphere). Everyone is welcome to submit a team, with no limit on age or ability. Teams should find sponsors to pledge money per lap they compete (i.e. 50 cents per lap x 350).

The money raised will go toward climate change initiatives, ideally the construction of a bike overpass at Haliburtan and the Pat Bay, providing further extension to Royal Oak/Galloping Goose trail, and thus allowing Royal Oak students and community members to commute safely over this extremely hazardous intersection.

There will be two divisions: a student ‘race’ will commence at 10 am, and the community ‘race’ will begin at 3pm.

There will be food, beverages, live music and prizes. We encourage teams to “get competitive”. There’ll be awards for team costumes, spirit and money raisers.

If you are interested in submitting a team, please e-mail Mark Neufeld at: mneufeld@sd63.bc.ca

More information will be posted at www.globalstudiesclaremont.webs.com

Everyone is invited to ride for change!
